Among proposals on dealing with challenges and accelerating Pangasius exports in 2010 submitted to MARD by VASEP, local authorizes are advised to take account of factors which stating that processing plant must have its own raw material production regions and stable markets when consider granting license on building or expanding Pangasius processing plants.

At present, the total processing capacity is estimated to exceed 600,000MT due to the mushroom growth of Pangasius processing plants in the Mekong Delta.

The increase in number of Pangasius processing plants and resulting processing capacity will lead to ‘unfair competition’ between companies, make difficult to control quality and develop markets in a sustainable way, causing negative impacts on Viet Nam Pangasius prestige and image in the world arena.

Viet Nam Pangasius industry saw export value to major markets, especially EU, reduce remarkably in 2009 in comparison with 2008. (VietFishNews)
